Auguste Rodin (1840-1917)

For Rodin, the female body was an inexhaustible source of inspiration throughout his life as an artist, so much so that it is difficult to date this small torso which resembles an antique sculpture through its firm volumes.

In fact, Auguste Rodin described himself as descending from a long line of sculptors faithful to the lessons of Greek and Roman art, of which he passionately collected countless pieces in marble, ceramic, glass, bronze, etc. The influence of antique art on his own works was so strong that he sometimes deliberately mutilated them, removing a head or limb from a figure to accentuate its resemblance to pieces from antiquity and to enhance the expressive power of the human body, reduced to its basic shape.
